2006 Toasted Head Dunnigan Hills Viognier,
$14.99 at most Harris Teeter stores.
Viognier is still sometimes an “also ran” in California, so you have to look a little harder for it. So after years of occasionally drinking Toasted Head's oaky chardonnay, we were surprised to see this viognier showing up. It has plenty of light fruitiness, with the honeysuckle and apricot tones we expect, but it isn't cloying. It's a blend with some juice aged in stainless tanks and half in aged French oak, giving it a nice balance and a little more steel than you expect.
