Columbia SC
Spectators use the Confederate
monument on the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse to catch a glimpse
of speakers during the annual Martin Luther King Day Rally sponsored
by the SC NAACP. Next to the monument flies the Confederate battle flag,
which flew over the dome of the State House until July 1, 2000, when
the flag was moved to the Monument to South Carolina's Confederate Dead
on the north side of the State House grounds. The South Carolina State
House is the only state capitol in the nation to have a monument dedicated
to the contributions and history of African-Americans on its grounds.
