It's the season for movie awards shows, which got us thinking: How do these shows pick their contenders and the winners?

Poverty. Hunger. Dislocation. Joblessness.

Frank Langella has an affinity for playing outsiders and flawed individuals, he says. On Broadway, he's getting into trouble with King Henry VIII every night as Sir Thomas More in “A Man for All Seasons”; onscreen, he played a sexy, memorable “Dracula” in 1979, and his latest cinematic outlier is President Nixon in “Frost/Nixon.”

A whopping eight movies open in Charlotte-area theaters today, varied enough so that the whole family can split up at the theater and take in a different flick. Save room for popcorn!

“Frost/Nixon,” which opens in Charlotte on Christmas, isn't exactly an easy sell.
